Perspectives on SiTUATE, the Digital Version of Structured On-the-Job Training

In the past several months, we’ve had the privilege of making presentations and giving demonstrations about SiTUATE to hundreds of managers and school administrators. We are grateful for the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from these individuals, as many had doubted it was possible to use a digital platform to deliver training that focuses on skills development, not on topics or concepts. Most readers of this blog know that SiTUATE is based on structured on-the-job training (S-OJT), which emphasizes training content based on a job and task analysis, techniques that are embedded in the platform. No other digital platform has this same focus or set of features.

Consistent with over 40 years of academic research on S-OJT, SiTUATE promises as well to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Reduce time to achieve the training objectives

  • Reduce training costs compared to online and classroom training

  • Increase quality of work outcomes

  • Improve the onboarding experience for new hires

  • Increase engagement between trainees with trainers, even when they are in separate locations

From these outcomes, many company managers in HR, training, quality, and safety, across business sectors, now view SiTUATE as an appealing platform to deliver effective on the job training, that also offers much integration and flexibility. At the same time, many administrators in training institutions view SiTUATE as an innovative way of providing a more planned learning experience to their students in apprenticeship programs.

In our various discussions, we advise clients on the planning process required to adopt SiTUATE. Early in this process, we ensure there’s a clear understanding of the performance issue to be addressed. This is critical for judging success later on.

As with all digital platforms, SiTUATE requires an outlay of resources but, in our case, the outlay is actually considered an investment, based on an expected return. As a service, we help clients calculate a return on investment, so they can know what performance outcomes were impacted when trainees learn tasks using SiTUATE. We can’t think of any other digital training platform that shares the same level of concern for impact.
